Last Giving Day, NAU debuted a Homecoming Giveaway sweepstakes to encourage alumni participation. Entry required a first-time donation or registration as a NAU Giving Day champion. The winner received an expenses-paid trip to Flagstaff for an NAU Homecoming weekend, along with access to the football game and festivities.

The lucky winner of the sweepstakes was Jocelyn Whiteneck, ’19. We sat down with her to learn her Lumberjack story and her thoughts on her experience.

Could you tell us about what you studied and your time at NAU?

I double majored in strategic communications with an emphasis in advertising, as well as sociology. I used to work for Ardrey Auditorium, and so it was really awesome getting to be a part of all those productions that they would put on there. And also, my sister was up here for a while I was, so getting to spend time with her during college was awesome.

What are some of your favorite memories from your time at NAU?

Honestly, my favorite memories include coming to Old Main and just studying or reading and just enjoying the quiet, fun vibes. I also enjoyed going to see movies at Prochnow. That was always one of my favorite things to do, as well as just other concerts and events that happened here. It’s so fun.

Did you attend Homecoming as a student? Was your Homecoming experience the same or different returning as an alum?

Yes, I did attend Homecoming as a student. Honestly, it feels about the same, like the excitement of the game and just all the traditions that are happening. I remember hearing about all the alumni events when I was a student here and just thinking, “Oh, I can’t wait to come back to participate in those, and here I am!”

How was it to be back in Flagstaff for Homecoming?

It was so great. I love it in Flagstaff—the weather, the fall colors, and just being back on my beautiful campus.

What were you most excited about during your Homecoming trip?

I was so excited to watch the game. It’d had been so long since I had been able to watch an NAU football game. And the last time I was in the Skydome, I was walking across the stage and getting my degree. It was exciting to be back. It’s so cool.

What encouraged you to participate in NAU Giving Day 2025?

I’ve always wanted to give back to NAU. It’s always been a goal of mine to give back to the community. And so, when this opportunity came up, I figured it was the perfect time to start.

What does giving back to NAU mean to you?

Giving back means paying it forward to future Lumberjacks. I’m sure a previous alumni donation helped me when I was at NAU in ways I didn’t even realize, so I think it’s important to continue that tradition and return the favor.

How do you plan to continue your connection to NAU as an alum?

I plan to continue to donate. I think it’s been a great experience so far as well. It’s just getting more involved with other alumni events, whether that’s back home or coming back up here to participate in them.
